Soma grew up pretty normal, average grades except having above average marks in anything related to languages. He did move around often due to his father's work, eventually getting into a dorm house for high school after proving that he was able to handle living away from the family.
Whenever Soma decided to join Sword Art Online, he told a few people his desired character name and that he would be trying to open a shop as soon as he could. However the name he wanted was taken, and with no way to contact those friends of his Soma has been more or less just been roaming around within the starting town since the reveal of the death system.
