Ethnicity:
Midwestern USA true melting pot.
Character Name:
Yorick
Face Claim:
Yukimura Sanada - Samurai Warriors
Appearance (You may use method 1 or 2, or use them both - this is the in-game character)
Method 1:
Appearance:
If he were a bit better exercised, he would likely have the physique of a basketball player. As it stands, however, the combination of his rather tall height and his father's propensity towards weight have combined to give him a not-quite ideal body-shape. He has a slight paunch, and though his arms (when visible) are wiry, they do not support the strength he may have gained with that appearance. A decade and a half of trying not to stand out in a crowd have leant a slight hunch to his shoulders, and makes him appear to always try and loom over those he exceeds in height.
His face has a slightly childish pudge to it, which he detests, and has attempted to cover up somewhat successfully with a moustache and goatee, and the 5 o'clock shadow of a few day's beard growth. His eyebrows are always caught in a slight scowl due to his slightly poor vision which, combined with his reticence to express himself fully in crowds, lends him an air of perpetual ill humor.
A slightly oriental tilt to his eyes and a reddish sheen to a few strands of his facial hair give hints to his Irish and Japanese heritage, and his temples are showing signs of premature greying due to stress. This is not helped by his current circumstances.
His hair is roughly an inch long, and is swept directly back from his developing widow's peak up top, and the sideburns and back of his hair lose length evenly until the back of his hair devolves into ill-trimmed fuzz about halfway down his neck.
His fingers and hands bear several small scars from farmwork, and on the inside of his left forearm, there are a pair of noticeably white scars, approximately a quarter inch long in a line, where as a very young child, he had blood drawn for a series of tests, and a circular scar along the right eye socket shows where he was injured by his glasses frame grinding into his skin after a rather serious fog.
Method 2:
Eye Color: Bright green
Hair Color: Black
Skin Tone: a mild persistent tan.
Physique: Tall and wiry, somewhat going to fat, with the very beginnings of a paunch
Height: around 5 foot 9 inches
Dominant Features: Consistent look of mild disapproval and dusting of grey hair on the temples
Scars/Markings: A pair of minor scars on his left forearm, and a barely visible semicircular scar around his right eye socket
[Personality]
A closed off, socially awkward individual, Yorick realizes that he cannot afford to isolate himself if he wishes to survive in SAO, and above all, to avoid falling into despair and despondency where he cannot envision any way his life can change for the better.
As such, he makes an effort to alter his personality to be more socially outgoing, with variable success. He makes an effort to 'dumb down' his speech patterns, as his thought proccesses usually elucidate much more eloquently than he feels others can understand, and this tends to make him rather thoughtful, if slow, in his responses.
Pining for worthwhile interaction, he strives to be part of groups, and has attempted to do so many times. However, his awkwardness, and unwillingness to display that awkwardness, has resulted in him almost always being a satellite individual within these groups and tolerated, not accepted. He entered into SAO in a bid to improve that aspect of himself - the fact that they would not be seeing 'him' allowing that degree of distance necessary to take those risks.
Invariably patient and empathic, with a quirky sense of humor, he is almost a perfect 'sounding board,' and has been the shoulder to cry on for any number of his female friends, which outnumbered his male associates almost three to one in 'the real world'. His reluctance to change the status quo and venture out of his comfort zone has resulted in a number of individuals whom he harbored deep feelings and love 'friend zoning' him, and as such, he has become even more awkward about expressing those feelings.
Core among those are an all but absolute loyalty, love, and focus. Capable of throwing himself into the jaws of a wild animal to save his friends and family, and concentrating on any single objective with a frightening, laser intensity, he feels all his emotions with terrible intensity, but tries his utmost to keep them from affecting how he acts.
Never one for overt shows of emotion in public, his eyes are nonetheless very expressive, and are able to display a plethora of emotion without a large number of other tells. The one exception is his rage. Incredibly slow to anger, and incredibly difficult to push past that critical point, he is capable of tamping down his irritation for years, even decades in some cases, before some minor slight, real or imagined, lights a spark, throwing him into a thankfully short-lived incandescent fury.
His experience with tabletop RPGs and small stage plays prior to being trapped in SAO have allowed him to easily put together a persona and stay within that persona. That, combined with an unyielding core of stubbornness means that even those persistent enough to find their way past his outward persona to glimpse his true feelings would have to put a great deal of work into befriending him enough to let his true personality show.

Sword Art The Nine Virtues of the Spear
Effect: A damage mitigation/counterattack sustained effect skill, this technique removes an amount of his offensive strength and increases the wear on his equipment while allowing him to better guide attacks around him with both his off hand and the haft of his polearm. On occasion (or possibly after an upgrade), the parry will create an opening allowing him a quick, low damage counterattack using the haft of the polearm, shield, or unarmed strike (should he gain Martial Arts later).
Trigger: Grasping his spear around the center of the half, he shifts it to so the point is down toward the ground.
Description: As the spearpoint drives towards the earth, his well-learned psychosomatic reaction sends his senses into overdrive. His mind latches onto every bit of detail before him, computing distances and vectors subconsciously even as his foot arcs casually in front of him to impact the spearhead and send it whirling around his hand, palm slapping against the haft as it levels against his opponent. A quick bluish-white sheen races from the tip of his weapon up the haft, striking his hands with a brief electric tingle through the nerve endings.
OR
The Branch Sweeps Along the River
Effect: A quick, minimal damage, distancing and mobility lowering skill or, if upgraded, it can become a knockback AoE attack with the second strike.
Trigger: His stance shifts, from what could be considered his primary to bring the rear part of the spear haft to eye level, opening his palm against the butt of the spear. His weight shifts backward slightly, even as his stance lowers.
Description: Muscles coiled tightly, his polearm acquires a metallic gray sheen, and with a kiai, he releases his pent energy into a forward thrust, punctuated by a widening circle of energy left behind in the spear-head's wake. From there, his strike has one of two branches: either a quick leap back combines with the one handed thrust's impact into the target to gain distance, or the balls of his feet dig into the ground as his stance shifts. Then, using his back-flung arm as a counterbalance, he pulls himself into a quick spin upon landing, striking at knee or ankle level with the haft of the spear.
[Biography]
Born to a family with a long medical tradition, he was the child of one of the county clinic's founders. An incredibly active and social sister three years his senior was his anchor and goal all in one, and he attempted to be worthy of her, as he saw it.
As a young child, he suffered from incredibly severe allergies, landing him in the hospital several times. After one incredibly severe allergen attack his parents practically reduced him to a 'bubble boy'. Forced to avoid physical pursuits, he turned to the mental, challenging his mind where he could not challenge his body, and finding that he was an incredibly quick learner with a phenomenal kinesthetic sense allowed him to enroll in martial arts classes for that bit of structure to calm his childish temper and to get him much needed exercise later in his youth.
Due to his illness and forced isolation he did not develop a social persona when very young, and had no chance to make all the mistakes that young people do in their initial reactions. As a result, by the time his allergies had subsided enough to allow him to interact with his peers, his fear of looking stupid further limited him. Without other avenues of release, he was forced to excel mentally.
It was not until his early teens that he was well enough to consistently help out around the small country property his family lived in, but when he was, he threw himself into it with a singleminded determination and focus typical of him. He was developing into a healthy individual when, at age 15, he had his first seizure.
They were uncommon and did not affect his life much, but they once more rendered him outcast. He would never join his peers in driving out to makeout point, and was taken off the dating list by the majority of his classmates. As a result, he focused more and more into his online gaming, where he could forget what a failure he viewed himself in life.
Then he heard about SAO. The rest, as we say, is history.
His avatar had been initially constructed with an odd combination of almost crippling caution and headstrong foolishness. A 'tank' character, created to avoid and survive almost anything, needed in every group, but without the ability to initially gather Hate that would make him a desired group companion, he had finished his hour long first session, and was contemplating quitting and re-creating a better optimized character when he was teleported to the square for the event that changed his life.
That is how he views it. How he has to. He reluctantly acknowledges that if he were not forced to, he would likely change nothing about himself. While he is almost blindingly terrified of dying, he has nonetheless forced himself into the world of SAO, and is working to become one of the individuals at the fore, attempting to drag himself, and everyone else in SAO back into the real world.
...So that he can apologize to his sister for blowing up at her for taking the car for her date, and leaving him to catch a ride home.
