Timor looked around the grassy plains. It seemed, to him at least, that there were only wolves and boars around here. He knew to stay away from the wolves; they were likely too strong for him to face, especially since he was still in his starting gear. Still, though... He knew a little bit about how quests worked in this game; generally, they had some kind of cue or action that would leave them open to response from a player. Once those conditions had been fulfilled, they would then open up and offer the player a 'quest'. He already knew of one such quest, located in Tolbana; but, to get there, he had to cross through these plains... And, he also knew that it was a very difficult, time consuming quest.
And so, he was stuck here, grinding in order to hopefully get better equipment, so that quest would be able to go along faster. While he hadn't heard of what the reward might be, he figured that he could at least sell it were it something he would be unable to use.
He decided to close in upon a lone boar. The hatchet and targe he wore felt familiar in his hands; as if he'd been using them for months. He'd have to ignore it for now, though... One of the strange things about SAO, he thought to himself, was that you couldn't just lash out at a monster to deal damage; you had to use Sword Arts to really kill them. "Alright," he spoke in hushed tones to himself. "Let's do this."
He rushed at the boar, his targe held aft; he had no idea how blocking attacks worked in this game, but... Maybe it was similar to a Sword Art? Maybe, he hoped, he could just block its attack normally, and mitigate the damage dealt by the boar.
A thousand things were racing in his mind as he saw the boar's cursor change from green -- unengaged -- to red. Meaning, it had seen him coming towards it. It began to move. Timor had to think fast-- would he be able to block its attack in time? He stopped his charge, ready for the boar to strike. He held his shield up as he saw the creature begin to move towards him...
His entire body began to move without his input. Was this a Sword Art? Whatever it was, it had done its job; less than a tenth of his health bar was depleted from its attack, and it was time for him to counter.
Wait! He couldn't move?! He hadn't heard anything about this! Was this something that all Sword Arts shared, or was it something unique to using a shield? Maybe if he'd boosted his agility higher, he wouldn't be suffering through this right now... Eventually, he was able to move again-- after about a second.
His grasp upon his hatchet tightened as he began to move towards it. There it was, that same sensation: his body moving without his input. So this was a Sword Art, he thought to himself once more. A trail of magenta followed his weapon as it smashed into the boar.He had to do a double take at its health-- it was nearly halfway down its health bar.
Once again, his body was frozen, but it passed in another second-- a second that the boar used to charge at him again. Its tusks pierced his armor, but he felt no pain; this was, he realized, likely intended to make fighting easier for those who had never fought in real life before.
A small smirk graced his lips. He realized, more or less, how to best fight these boars. He would need to wait until it began to strike, and then either counter (or better yet, avoid) however it tried to attack him. He saw the boar begin to rile itself up again; hopefully, he'd be able to end it with this next strike...
As the animal launched itself at him again, he countered with a horizontal slice from his axe. Still system-assisted. He would, hopefully, get used to it sooner rather than later. He caught the boar on the neck, and an orange gash appeared for a moment before it began to fade away.
So, he had done it. He'd killed his first enemy in Sword Art Online, and his health was still otherwise good. That was great. Calming down from the surge of adrenaline in his body, he looked at his UI. There was a window proclaiming what he had gained... Col, the currency of this game, and other drops that seemed typical to creatures of its nature. He closed the window after claiming his spoils.
He took a seat not far from where he had slain the creature. He thought to himself about how long the fight had taken... Maybe a minute? If they all were that quick, then he would have little trouble gaining enough experience and money to begin exploring the rest of the floor. He idly ran his hand over the grass as he thought about everything that had happened so far... What a hell of a day, huh?
