[Character name] Mathias
[Faceclaim] Original Art
[Appearance]
Mathias stands at 6 ft tall and weighs about 154 pds. His eyes are dark brown, but he wears bright yellow lenses over them most of the time. His skin is leathery tan due to his heritage and amount of time spent outdoors. He wears his silver-gray hair in a downhawk form. The sides of his head are neatly shorn, but the rest of his hair is floppy and somewhat floofy. Green highlights surface at the crest of his bangs and in other various tufts. His melanocytes (pigment cells) stopped making color around the time he was 14 years old.
Apart from the information stated previously, Mathias' body would be best classified as sturdy. He trains his body to stay well-rounded. He kind of looks like a punk on first impression and may be a little unkempt. Some people are unable to read him at first and could be intimidated with his build. Concerning clothing, Mathias keeps things casual. He likes clothing that fits well — not too tight or too loose. He is usually seen in a half-sleeve, sky-blue hooded cloak that stretches to his thighs or in a high-neck, crop-sleeve tank with a minimalist leaf pressed on the front. His pants vary, but they are usually loose-fitting or made of a breathable material. (Colors for tank and pants vary. He's fine with his comfort zone, so he wears a lot of the same thing.) He isn't partial to shoes but prefers standard black sandals when walking. At home he opts to wear mismatched socks because he's frankly too lazy to do the matching. At times, Mathias wraps the area from his wrists to his knuckles in black cloth to keep them from ripping open. Mathias has two pink 'x' tattoos on his cheek and neck — just because, really. Does he need a reason? The large crack across his left jaw is a tattoo as well. Suits him just fine.

[Sword Art: Vexing Thorn]
Effect: Vexing Thorn stuns 1-3 targets for X amount of time. If desired, Mathias deals a standard attack worth of damage when releasing this ability. This damage is distributed among the targets. Dealing damage ends the snare effect. (Close Range AoE: 1 Hit, 100% damage. Stuns close targets for 1d3 rounds. Any damage on targets during stun negates stun effect.)
Trigger: Mathias places his hand on the tip of his axe and drives it into the ground. His palm rests on the butt of the handle.
Description: Upon slamming the ground, the axe sends out vibrations that seek out surrounding targets, knocking them to the ground. If he twists his wrist as he thrusts downward, the ground breaks beneath the target and triggers the damage effect.
[Personality]
Mathias, though a tad gruff-looking, is a gentle soul and a pantheist. He can be awkward with people at times and can come off as gloomy. He greatest enjoys the company of (most) animals and feels most at home beneath a large oak (or, you know, wooden buildings or something). He is a "yes" man so much to the extent that it's unhealthy, so he needs a little help when refusing requests sometimes. Either way, he's always up for a challenge and likes to compete to be the most loyal to his cause. (Some personal hangup he has. It's unlikely he could explain it.) Speaking of explaining things, he's kind of crap at it — meaning he prefers actions and gestures over words, so it's infuriating to some. Mathias feels embarrassed when spoken about and can't control the blood rushing to his face sometimes — actually, almost all of the time. He has a tendency to become distracted if something more interesting comes along, and he gets sensory overload in crowds. He is put off by disrespectful or persnickety people and treats all living beings as equals; there is zero tolerance of judgement. He adores adventure, but becomes a coward when asked to be around water more than six feet deep.
If pushed past his point of tolerance, Mathias can have a sharp tongue and will spit out fighting words. When faced with failure, he locks himself away in what could best be described as a hissy fit; he loathes himself if he ever disappoints a friend and will beat himself up over it for quite some time.
Being of the protective sort, Mathias keeps his companions close and near becomes a masochist in order to keep them from harm. At most times, he is non-confrontational and prefers non-violent methods of conflict resolution. "Life's what keeps th' world going. Who 'm I to challenge it?"
When in battle, Mathias wastes little time with speaking unless it is deemed necessary. He is flexible in the sense that he can be a leader or follower, but he works best as a partner rather than a subordinate. He's not demanding of his partners but expects them to pull their weight in dire situations. When confronted with a challenge, he tends to act brashly and has little patience for plans that take more than 15 seconds to explain. In addition, he rarely questions the situation. Before embarking on a mission, Mathias doesn't particularly care for the minor details and would rather not become personally attached, biased, or influenced by another's emotions. He does not enjoy killing living creatures, so much so that he's sworn it off. Sure, the creature in game are pixels, but he can't stand the sight of it. It'd be best to not slay any boars around him. He is a go-to guy and isn't afraid to fight until he near passes out; he greatly enjoys testing his limits. He's fairly good at taking orders even if he has such a short attention span. Mathias aims to please, mainly because failure is not an option for him. Though he may keep a level head when times get tough, he isn't prepared to give clear orders due to his current low rank and lack of experience.
[Biography]
Mathias' family moved to Japan when he was two years old, so he's only Italian in the family sort of sense. With little passion for school, he retained information just fine. Sure, he wasn't a brainiac, but he made consistent B's with no studying on his part. He grew up running around in nature with his father, who passed away two years ago in an automobile accident. In addition, he spent a good amount of time conditioning his body and learning to craft things out of wood and metal he found laying around. His mother, who works as a zookeeper, taught him a great deal about animals, and he spent a good amount of time bonding with creatures of all types. He believed most animals to be purer than humans and was quite aloof with his acquaintances. In high school, he joined an organic preservation group and became a pescetarian. Both his parents encouraged him and were fine with his grades and hobbies. Mathias played videogames occasionally and only entered Aincrad because his friend said the natural graphics were state of the art. In short, his life before Aincrad was fairly uneventful, but he certainly stood out as an eccentric.
