A Quick Guide to Applications
A step-by-step guide on how to make your application be awesome and be approved quickly
Remember that this profile will be translated into the template by staff so don’t worry about formatting or making it fancy, this sheet should be as easy to read as possible so the GM’s can translate it over as quick as they can...Please do not reply to the template or to this guide...All you need to do is copy the template in its respective post, make a new thread containing your avatars name (more on that below) and paste the application to fill it in.
Images: Should be 550x450 and hosted on a reliable server, color is recommended along with an anime style. The art can be original however having multiple art/poses for the same character can help dress up your posting template and your profile later on.
Player Name: First and last…This is your real name outside of the game, so it is best that it remain believable or a fully-explained nickname. No one is going to believe that your parents named you foxfire…unless they were hippies or beatniks.
Age: Again, just like your character name this has a wide range. However, believably is still recommended. While it is possible that a 6 year old can play this game, would they be able to play it? What would the effect be on other characters when they see a 6yr old risking their life on the front lines? The exact same is possible with any character 70-plus, would that older character be able to play the game safely?
Relationship status: Self-Explanatory, There is a wide range of things to choose from be it single, married, divorced, relationship, open-relationship, poly-amorous…etc…
Nationality: What country are you from? Be aware that this is a MMO and so all countries capable of internet access will be able to access this game. This field dictates a lot of things in your character’s posts…While English is the major spoken language, does your character have an accent? How does the customs and culture of your country affect your character’s behaviors?
Ethnicity: Same as above and there are near limit-less options here as well. This has the further ability to impact your posts. An Anglo-phone Canadian from Quebec experiences life and has a different upbringing than a French Canadian, while they have the same mother-culture (Canada), there may be minor differences in their upbringing, such as food, language, and customs.
Likes: As many or as few as you want, you have free range creatively but keep these items down to one-three word entries. These can influence the behavior and give quite a bit into how a character thinks in a given situation…For example, if Bob likes books and reading…he may be offended when a quest involves burning a book or a library…
Dislikes: Same as above…
Character name: This is where creativity pays off, be sure to make sure that you aren’t close to another players name but other that you have free reign to pick whatever name for your avatar you would like. You can even choose your real name (what’s the fun in that). The only restrictions are: the name not be blatantly trolling (sexypants, anallover, yourmomma) and it cannot include numbers. Avatar names are subject to GM and admin scrutiny.
Face-claim: This field is mostly to keep people from choosing the same character to portray or if they want to play a canon character. Please put down both the character’s name and what anime they are from.
[Appearance (You may use method 1 or 2, or use them both - this is the ingame character)]
Method 1:
Appearance: Give an overview of your characters appearance…This is just a block of text that describes him/her. We are looking for a pretty detailed appearance here, so please let this be no shorter than six sentences that describes how your avatar appears in game. Remember that due to the calibration feature on your game headset, this matches your actual player’s appearance very closely.
Method 2: Self-explanatory appearance characteristics…
Eye Color: Standard colors (remember that this is anime!)
Hair Color: Self-explanatory
Skin Tone: Self-explanatory
Physique: Self-explanatory
Height: Imperial measurements please!
Dominant Features: What is the first things that someone would notice?
Scars/Markings: Self-explanatory
[Attribute Points (distribute 10 points among the stats, however everything must be at least 1 and nothing can be over 5.)]
Please read the handbook regarding these. This is one of the most important steps that you can take in this application besides your character’s personality. This is since these base stats will dictate your rolls for the various roles in the game, be it Tank, Bruiser, DPS Etc. While this game is not completely about stats these numbers will help dictate how you role-play your character: Are you fast? Are you strong? Hardy?
Strength: 1-5
Agility: 1-5
Dexterity: 1-5
Endurance: 1-5
Remember you only have 10 points to allocate, make them count! Once accepted these are final!
[Talents (Choose 3, at least one must be a weapon skill)
Talent 1:
Talent 2:
Talent 3:
Talents are another important game-mechanics aspect here since these talents dictate what weapons and what your character can do in a special way…Do you want to use curved swords? Pick treasure chests? Use acrobatics? Craft? Here is where you differentiate your character form the herd. Remember that there must be at least one weapon amongst the three…everyone must at least be able to fight.
[Sword Art (if you would like an image for this, it is 100x100)] Put the name here!
Effect: Do you want it to deal more damage? Attack multiple times? Give an idea on what it will do and we will determine the actual "stats" of it.
This needs to be a simple “my sword art has this effect” type of description. All of the stats, be it damage numbers, cooldown, and the like will be decided by the admins during final review. Really all we are looking for is a basic description:
For example: Demon’s Cut consists of a deep series of three slashes to a creature’s back, severing nerves and lowering a creatures defenses for it to be attacked by other players.
Trigger: The game of sword art online doesn't have buttons to press to operate abilities. Instead you position your body in a specific way. Usually a stance or specific movement. That how you "trigger" it.
What does your character do to activate the sword art…this can be as simple as having a particular stance, movement or flourish…Please describe what movement does your character do right before they attack with their sword art? Be creative with this one!
Description: How does it look, sound, feel? Have at it.
This is the meat/potatoes of the sword art section…how does it feel when you use the sword art? Does the art have a flash of light? color? temperature? Feel free to be as descriptive as you can with this section. You can even make a sample post of your character using the art…
[Personality]
Who are you in SAO? Note this does not apply to your out of character personality. Just explain what your like now. Are you happy go-lucky and friends with everyone? Can you spend days upon days alone and not break down? Or perhaps you were just insane to begin with?
This section is absolutely important, if you were just steam-rolling through this application and paid attention to only one field, this would be it. This is where the beginnings of your character’s voice would be…Ask yourself questions like: What are they like around new people? What is their demeanor? How would they react to most situations? What is their play style? Are they afraid of crowds? Why? Usually this takes at least 8 sentences to do right, but really a full paragraph would do nicely. Remember that this is one area where your avatar and your player can diverge: Are you a nervous person in real life like Sinon, and use the game to be strong?
[Biography]
Your characters history, Your players history. You can put whatever you like here and update it in the future if you'd like to add things that happen in the game. This can include history of your player off the game in his past life.
This is a running section that can be expanded as you go…However, we are looking for at least 8-10 sentences here as well on both your avatar and your player. Multiple questions can be used to flesh this section out such as: What did your player do before the release? Were they beta-testing? Did they stand in line? How were they raised? What was their profession? What events made their personality the way it is? For your avatar, bear in mind that you are more or less a newly created character for the most part (unless created from the death/re-spawn of a prior character…which if you were, you would know it) so really this part can be short…Question that can be answered for this: What did your avatar do when they discovered that they can’t log out? Did they hide in the starting city? Grind? Fight to the Dungeon?
