Floor 1: The Plains
The plains consists of several medieval-esque towns and cities (Beginnings, Tolbana, and Horunka) with farmlands and prairies in-between the major populated areas. There are a few ponds and lakes scattered about the floor to provide fresh water to the populace, and also where one might fish and relax. In addition to these features…the Black Forest is the largest wooded area on the floor and provides a steady supply of wood, with the bulk of hardwood consisting of chestnut and other deciduous trees and shrubs, however it is plagued with poor weather and overrun at times with the hostile creatures of the floor.
Beginnings (starting city) is the largest town in Aincrad and consists largely of white stone buildings and monuments contained within a well-lit stone wall. The largest of these buildings is the Black Iron Palace at the center of the city…which contains the Monument of Life which lists all known players trapped, with those that have died having a large line carved over them. Taking up 10% of the 1st floors surface, the city is large enough to house and feed over 6000 people within its many buildings, all of which are served by paved stone roads lined with street lights.
The NPCs of the floor are dressed simply in clothing consisting of cotton and wool, with the occasional merchant or noble sporting richer and rarer fabrics unavailable to the player at this point. In addition, the food and beverage of the floor is simple at best, consisting of farmhouse cheeses (common), wheat/rye/barley breads (very common), and roasted meats/sausages (luxury), prepared with little spices or sauces. Being primarily a grain area, the beverages of the floor reflect that fact and consist of beers (very common), water (very common) and whiskeys (luxury), with strong herbal teas (common) from the black forest making up the bulk of non-alcoholic drinks along with plain milk (common). Shops on this floor consist of level 1 gear with very little frills, mostly consisting of materials for level 1 crafting and level 1 consumables (potions and port stones), as well as throwing weapons (level 1 and 2).
Floor 2: The Lake
The lake consists of several small fishing villages (Port Noir and Var) surrounding the large body of fresh-water. Port Noir is a picturesque fishing village on the north side of the lake, anchored by its city-center on the large cliffs overlooking its principal source of income, fishing from the lake. Many large multi-story houses make up the central city, packing in a larger population then the area would normally be able to support making the area appear less inviting and more of a sprawl. Near the lake, the boats of Port Noir indicate the bulk of its population make their living on the water with a large traffic of vessels leaving the city in the morning and returning at dark. The city itself is more dingy than the town of Beginnings showing that life is much harder here than on the first floor, with much of the city going dark after hours with few street lamps present in the more wealthy parts of the city. The buildings are often weather-beaten from the breeze off of the lake, consisting of mostly wooden structures covered in a ubiquitous white paint that is often cracking from its age. The streets are cobblestone, often covered with moss fed by the damp and humid breezes. Weather here is random with storms blowing in off of the lake often with long breaks of sunlight urging people to both work and play at the water’s edge.
The lake itself is a fisherman’s paradise stocked with all measures of catches in its murky green water. Consisting of over 20% of the floor, the lake is the floor’s dominant feature flanked by stony beaches and straggled trees, the always present breeze doing well to strip much of the vegetation bare. The highlands makes up the majority of the floor not covered by lake or village and it the major grinding area of the floor which consists of thin trees and rather lean vegetation due to the stony soil and bare hills that make up the majority of its surface. Much of it is sloped with exposed moss-covered rock surfaces that make moving long distances a rather difficult affair. To the western highlands lays the Timberline, a small forest of trees scattered about the highlands…While much easier to navigate due to the sparse vegetation, due to the rocky and hilly environment many caves lay in wait here many marked with the tell-tell signs of eight-legged occupants. On top of the furthest-eastern hills of the highlands lay the curious gate…an unusual rock formation seemingly out of place on the floor which remains a curiosity even amongst the more educated NPCs of the floor.
The NPCs of the floor have a much harder life than that of the earlier floor, with clothing that consists of woolen fabrics and leathers designed for working on fishing vessels, with these garments often in various states of repair. The rare noble or very well-to-do merchant is able to afford more expensive clothing naturally, but these are often rare due to the shortage of expensive materials available on the floor. Food here is simple but hardy, often consisting of coarse brown bread (Very-Common) and an almost ubiquitous stew made of fresh fish in a spicy tomato based broth (Very Common) similar to a cioppino. Additionally, grilled fish with salt (Common) is available at most of the inns of the city along with rarely caught fresh-water shellfish (Luxury). Drinks available consist of various styles of ales (Very Common), water (Very Common) and dark rum (Luxury). A thick black tea (Common) is present here that remains the dominant non-alcoholic beverage, often served heavily spiced with milk from the first floor. Goods available at the player shops are often crafting materials (Level 1 to level 2), Level 1 consumables, as well as throwing weapons (Level 3 to Level 4).
