On average, about one out of every six players that join a roleplaying site will be a long-term active member. The other five will quit after a week. This is the case for almost all roleplaying sites and SAO RPG is no exception.
So if we want to grow and maintain our player base, we have to identify why so many people lose interest so quickly. I always thought the reason most people leave a site is because they get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of rules, the complicated character application process, and the fact that there are so many veteran players that they feel they can never catch up. The good news is that these three dilemmas do not describe SAO RPG. Our rules and character application process are simple and the highest-level player is just level 4.
So why are we losing so many roleplayers after one week? To be honest, I don't know the answer to that question, but I do have a few strategies that we can use to persuade new players to keep roleplaying with us.
I'm a public relations major so most of my classes focus on the art of persuasion and what I've learned is the most persuasive word in the English language is "free." We should target new members with "free" rewards if they meet a certain activity criteria in the first week and again in the first month. For example:
These strategies not only provide an incentive for new players to stick around, but it encourages greater roleplaying activity as well.

- New members who write 10 IC posts or 5,000 words by the end of their first week will receive a 25 percent experience boost in a thread of their choice.
- New members who write 30 IC posts or 20,000 words by the end of their first month will receive a legendary weapon (or something like that.)
These strategies not only provide an incentive for new players to stick around, but it encourages greater roleplaying activity as well.
