In SAO (and in real life), Azrael is cold and emotionless. He doesn't speak much, and when (or if) he gets into a conversation, he can be very direct which can cause trouble for him sometimes. He isn't very fond of people that are "so full of themselves" and have an "im better than you" attitude, and usually gets into a fight with said kind of people. When Dorian (Azrael) was around the age of 7, a robber had come into his house at night. because his father was out at work late, the only people there was his mother and himself. while the robber was there, his mother had noticed and had called the police for help. right as she finished, however, the robber saw her call them and, to try and stop her, shot her down. a few minutes later, Dorian had woken up to the sounds of footsteps and police sirens. when he got out of his room, he saw the body of his mother on the ground. seeing this, he went into a state of emotional distress and a small state of depression. after the incident, his father, wanting to get the memory out of his head, moved to a new state.
In Dorian's new school, his attitude and emotions caused him to be a major target for a bunch of the bullies there. at first, he would always end up crying himself to sleep, usually having bruises heading home from school. But as he grew up, he started to form his "tough outer shell", causing him to become emotionless, not caring about the surroundings around him. he grew up not making any friends at all, and that worried his father. If he doesn't have any friends when he gets older, what is he going to do with his life? so for his 16th birthday, he got Dorian a nerve gear as his present, hoping that it could help him become more social. When he entered SAO, Dorian, as his username Azrael, he became angered by the fact that this "Akihiko Kayaba" had locked them in there for his own amusement. He therefore vowed to beat SAO and put an end to his insane plot.
