SouthernCross, as he goes by in the game, is decently outgoing though he has little experience with actual friends. Most of his interactions with other people has been through his political campaigns over the last decade. As such he is uncertain how to handle people on a personal level and constantly worries that he will mess something up.
This has lead to an aloof nature and a tendency to solo play, at least for now.
He has a very slow temper, so much so that people who have known him his whole life struggle to recall when they ever saw him angry. Some have gone so far as to say he never gets angry, he just gets even. This has even become a meme surrounding his campaigns.
While he is a battle junky who loves a good fight, something he openly admits in his campaigns, who has always made a point that he wants to see a world free of conflict. He sees it as a goal worth striving for even as his cynical side admits it's likely impossible to ever achieve.
Following the earlier events within SAO Cross initially put his experience of leadership to use and helped organize the volunteers who would look out for the people who where too scared to take to the fields as well as helping to round up the kids who needed to be cared for. In the short time between Day Zero, as he calls it, and the present he has already organized a system of volunteers to care for the children and non-combatants as well hunting parties to provide food and money to support them. This was partially due to the confusion of those first days and partially due to sheer force of personality and experience. The people needed a leader and he was there to fill that void.LIKES

James was destined to be a gamer from the day he was born. His parent's had met in an arcade in the 80s as preteens and become fast friends before having their first date in the same arcade in the 90s. He was even conceived after his parents had had a rather ferocious match of Street Fighter on their home console.
From an early age his parents rationalized non-gaming activities as having a gaming related benefit; studying at school means a good job which pays for more games, martial arts would keep his body healthy meaning he could play games longer. Along the way he discovered he enjoyed exercising his brain and body on two very different kinds of battlefields; the political arena and the physical one.
Even in high school he would challenge anyone who dared to debates over various political issues that effected his nation, regardless of subject. This habit actually lead to a girl attempting to murder him when he defeated her repeatedly over one issue or another (the attempt failed when he casually tossed her over a fence. According to rumours she crushed on him for the remainder of their school years). Instead of discouraging him this only enflamed his passions further and he went on to vie for the Premiership of his state after his graduation.
When he isn't intimidating his political opponents whenever he enters a room he is either playing video games or practicing his martial arts. He's only studied two forms of martial arts, Tae Kwon Do and Karate, but he has since adapted those styles into a third to make full use of his size, absurd reaction times and impressive pain tolerance. While most would assume it consists of 'hulking out' and hitting hard but slowly that is precisely the opposite of the adaption; he focused on speed and precision, his natural weaknesses, resulting in a form both fast and powerful when used with a massive body, or lightning fast with precise accuracy when used by a smaller person.
As a gaming enthusiast, which he bases parts of his political campaign on, buying SAO was a no brainer. He even advertised in it his campaign, inviting his supporters to find him ingame.
