Rio was always expected to study, and for a long time, that's what took up most of her free time. For her parents it paid off, her marks were great, but everytime they praised her they added a sentence like „Next time you'll do even better!“, leaving her mind restless. Although she did strive to excel in academics, she felt empty as she almost never went out with friends and had to deny every time a boy asked her out. That is, until she got into a prestigious high school and moved into an apartment on her own. As long as her marks were good enough she could spend the rest of her day however she wanted, so she joined the Kenjutsu Club and discovered online games as her new passion. She would often stay up late playing first-person shooters, but the lack of sleep showed in school and soon her parents threatened to force her to move back if she did not show some discipline. When Rio purchased the NerveGear with SAO she was hoping for a world far away from that, although that wish became a little too true. The first few days she was in panic because she had been alone in her apartment when they were imprisoned in the game, and she could have died of dehydration. But thankfully she seemed to be lucky and somebody found her before that happened, or she probably would not be in the game anymore, right? After recovering from those days filled with anxiety, she now tries to join a party to beat this god-damn game.
